McDaniel\, author of Go Forth and Tell. \n\n\n\nThis month’s talk will feature a family-friendly and interactive collage workshop led by McDaniel. \n\n\n\nMcDaniel’s latest book\, “Go Forth and Tell: The Life of Augusta Baker\, Librarian and Master Storyteller\,” is a captivating nonfiction picture book that chronicles the life of Augusta Baker\, a beloved children’s librarian and storyteller who became the first Black coordinator of children’s services at all branches of the New York Public Library. McDaniel: \n\n\n\nBreanna J. McDaniel is an emerging creative and recovering scholar. She’s published in myriad academic journals\, an academic anthology and her debut picture book Hands Up! was published with Dial Books in 2019. \n\n\n\nSince its publication\, Hands Up! was selected as a children’s book that “Books All Young Georgians Should Read” in 2019 by the Georgia Center for the Book. Recognized by the Chicago Public Library as\, “one of the very best picture books published for kids from birth to 3rd grade in 2019\,” in their Best of the Best Books round-up for 2019 and finally\, Hands Up! was awarded the “2021 First Novelist Honor Book” by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association\, Inc. and School Library Journal. She is also the author of other picture books\, including Atlanta\, My Home and Impossible Moon which was published with Denene Millner Books/ Simon and Schuster. \n\n\n\nBreanna completed her PhD at a university in the UK and looked at surveillance in representations of Black children as food. As an activist\, she is engaged in thinking through access to different types of literacy for families from the Global Majority and she’s adamant about promoting the work and connections of children’s book creators from those communities too.

This provided her with the opportunity to build her clientele base while simultaneously collaborating with other creatives. Her work has been featured in several publications such as Vogue\, Paper magazine\, Elle UK\, and Vanity Fair\, and has attracted notable clients such as Amandla Stenburg and Christina Jackson. In addition to her salon work\, she’s partnered with companies such as R29 Unbothered and worked with SONY in Los Angeles\, further expanding her reach and influence in the industry. \n\n\n\nAbout the Jewelry Making workshop with Jam + Rico \n\n\n\nIn this hands-on session\, you’ll delve into the art of basic jewelry wire wrapping while crafting your very own custom charm necklace. Under the guidance of jeweler Lisette Scott owner of Jam+Rico\, you’ll learn essential techniques to transform simple wire into stunning wearable art. From mastering various wrapping styles to selecting and arranging charms that reflect your unique style\, this workshop offers a perfect blend of education and expression. Join us for an unforgettable experience where you’ll not only learn a new skill but also leave with a one-of-a-kind piece that tells your story. \n\n\n\nJam + Rico is a colorful and unique jewelry line that is inspired by the Caribbean. Lisette is a force to be reckoned with and she has taken the industry by storm since creating Jam + Rico in 2016. You may have seen Jam + Rico online\, at pop-ups and with collection launches at Moda Operandi Inc\, Target and currently Claire’s. Lisette was also part of the Natural Diamond Council’s Emerging Designer Diamond Initiative to create an exclusive collection using diamonds. Lisette is also Co-Founder and Events Chair of Black in Jewelry Coalition. Jam + Rico has been featured in Vogue\, Forbes\, Elle and was recently worn by Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose\, Ashanti and many others! \n\n\n\nAbout the Headwrap Workshop with Grey’s Wraps \n\n\n\nLearn about headwraps in different countries\, what makes our hair special\, and modern western headwrap types. Jasmin from Grey Wraps will be showing several ways to wrap allowing time in between each transition to answer questions and assist guests in completing their own wrap. \n\n\n\nJasmin McKenzie\, artist and owner of Grey’s Wraps\, is a first generation Jamaican-American brand based out of New Jersey. After launching in 2021 Grey’s has been featured in several festivals\, music videos\, and most recently in promotions for Bob Marley: One Love.Jasmin creates handmade headwraps and bodywraps to celebrate the ancient indigenous cultures of the past with modern influences of the present. \n\n\n\nAbout DJ Lovie \n\n\n\nLovie’s music discovery was born in the digital music age: a young lover of local radio and after-school MTV marathons\, her early mixes took shape in the form of burned CDs she made for friends. In relocating from her hometown of Washington\, D.C. to New York in August of 2020\, Lovie’s unique selection swiftly ushered her into New York’s local music scene. Within a year\, she’d earned a Lot Radio residency; and has since become a staple at notable venues throughout the city\, a resident of the beloved Coloring Lessons by muscle cars\, and a cofounder of Brooklyn’s sweetest party\, Soul Connection. (215 E 99th St\, New York\, NY 10029)\n\n\n\n\nProduction Background:\n\n\n\nFor Beyond Punishment: Stories of Justice and Healing\, Kirya Traber was invited by JBPC to bring together a group of organizers with lived experience of incarceration to share their own stories in an interview-based theater production. Beyond Punishment was created through interviews and workshops with the cast members. The theatrical format of the presentation is based on and inspired by Ping Chong and Company (PCC)’s Undesirable Elements series of interview-based theater works examining issues of identity\, place\, and belonging. Each production is made with local partner organizations and local participants telling their own stories on stage. Creator Kirya Traber is a long-time collaborating artist and facilitator in the Undesirable Elements series. \n\n\n\nAbout the producers & creators:\n\n\n\nThe Justice Beyond Punishment Collaborative (JBPC) is a project of the Columbia Center for Justice with the goal of addressing the intersections of state and interpersonal violence\, and strengthening our ideas and approaches to safety and justice that do not rely on punishment\, domination\, and supremacy. We are working to support our movements in offering compelling and cohesive stories and messaging to end violence\, with the goal of realizing a world with justice beyond punishment. Participating organizations include the Center for Constitutional Rights\, Community Capacity Development\, Common Justice\, Girls for Gender Equity\, How Our Lives Link Altogether (H.O.L.L.A!)\, The National Council for Currently and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls\, Release Aging People in Prison (RAPP)\, the Surveillance Resistance Lab\, and V-Day. The Campaign also includes individual collaborators Charlene Allen\, Kathleen Pequeño\, and Sharon White-Harrigan. The Collaborative is supported by Trinity Church Wall Street. \n\n\n\nPing Chong and Company (PCC) creates theater and art that reveal beauty\, invention\, precision\, and a commitment to social justice. Originally founded in New York City in 1975\, today the company is a highly adaptive and supportive home base for multigenerational\, interdisciplinary artists with generative theater practices. The company creates original interdisciplinary\, community-specific work; and cultivates artistry through training and education programs. She was New York Stage and Film’s 2020 Founders Award recipient\, and Lincoln Center’s Community Artist in Residence from 2015-2020. Her debut novel based on her play\, Ready or Not\, will be published by Dutton Books. DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join us for 3 RITES: Happiness\, the third and final installment of 3 RITES: Life\, Liberty\, Happiness\, a three-part performance series by DELIRIOUS Dances/Edisa Weeks. A celebratory investigation of how laughter and pleasure reside in the body. The “Happiness” rite is about self-care and making time to relax\, laugh and recharge for the labor to uphold the values of life\, liberty and happiness. Each showing will consist of a Happiness Fête and special performances. The performances will feature four dancers and commissioned music by Nathaniel Braddock\, played live by the Occidental Brothers Dance Band International. The rite begins with the Happiness Fête where the audience is invited to engage in a collective celebration of wellness and joy by participating in portrait sketches\, massages\, Delirious Hair Designs\, learning line dances\, sharing a meal and more. The Fete is followed by laughtercises\, and the performance that culminates in a dance party with the audience. WHC’s 2023 Harvest Festival was centered on health and wellness –  and featured an on-site farmers’ market\, health fair\, arts & crafts\, yoga and pilates\, live music\, tours of the historic Hunterfly Road Houses\, special presentations\, and so much more!
